Electronic cigarette: how does it work?

The functioning of an electronic cigarette is simple and will remain the same for almost all models of electronic cigarettes, regardless of the brand: Eleaf, Joyetech, Aspire, GeekVape, or JustFog.

An electronic cigarette consists of 4 elements, each playing a very specific role:

1. A clearomizer

  • Composed of a tip called “drip tip”, which allows you to inhale the vapor.

  • Also includes the tank and the coil.

  • Has a screw spacing that allows you to screw the clearomizer onto the battery.

  • Depending on the model, the clearomizer has an airflow adjustment ring called “airflow”.

Their role is crucial for vapor production and the proper functioning of the electronic cigarette. There are different models of clearomizers, depending on your vaping profile and the amount of vapor you want to achieve (coil selection).

2. A rechargeable battery or a “box”

  • Provides the current, expressed in volts, necessary to heat the coil and vaporize the e-liquid. It is the power source of your electronic cigarette.

  • Equipped with a switch called “switch”, which allows electricity to flow to the coil when pressed.

  • Its capacity is expressed in mAh (milliamp hours). The higher the battery capacity, the longer the electronic cigarette will last. Therefore, it is important to know your tobacco consumption before choosing an e-cigarette battery. For example, if you smoke 1 pack a day, then a 650 mAh battery will not be sufficient to vape all day.

There are several models of batteries. Most are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The most successful batteries are available in different sizes and shapes, including boxes. They are rectangular and offer a long battery life while ensuring good vaping comfort.

Depending on the clearomizer used, you can find different battery models in our online store.

3. A coil or “resistance”

  • Composed of a resistance wire, which is usually made of kanthal. Once the battery is turned on, electricity flows through the resistance wire and heats it up.

  • With a silica or organic cotton wick, in direct contact with the resistance wire. Soaked in e-liquid, the wick promotes the evaporation of the liquid at the level of the resistance wire.

Therefore, thanks to the current provided by the battery, the coil will heat the e-liquid and ensure its evaporation. This evaporation, mixed with the inhaled air, creates vapor and produces the sensation of smoking when inhaling.

Depending on the model of the clearomizer, the coil can be placed at the top or bottom of the tank:

  • A coil at the bottom is submerged in the e-liquid. Being soaked prevents the taste of a “dry hit” or burnt flavor.

  • The coil at the top creates warmer vapor and enhances the impact.

The coil is a consumable that needs to be changed regularly. Knowing when to change your coil, you should pay attention to the sensation in your mouth.

4. A tank or “reservoir”

  • It is also called a cartridge and contains the flavored e-liquid.

  • Generally, the tank is transparent to have a constant view of the e-liquid level.

  • It can be made of plastic (PET) or glass (pyrex).
